As we walked, we recorded our thoughts and, inevitably, the background sounds of traffic, nature, watercourses, reverberating tunnels, dirt bikes, and crackling overhead cables became accidental field recordings.
Nightdubbing assembled these into a soundtrack, with musical elements inspired by the atmospheres and sounds captured on the recordings. The sound of drips in a tunnel, the reverberation of speech, the constant rumble of traffic, the swoosh of tires on tarmac, and electrical interference were sampled and looped into rhythms and odd textures. Rather than create an amorphous musical collage, these elements inspired beats, basslines, and sweeping strings, shifting between ambience, low-slung dubby grooves, speedy rave breakdowns, and widescreen cinematic techno.
The result is a 36-minute continuous piece that blurs the lines between field recording, documentary, and dance music.
There are two versions: Clockwise and Anti-clockwise, the latter being mostly instrumental so you can appreciate the music on its own terms.
